BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. (KAIT) - The Blytheville Police Department has arrested a man after a dog attack killed a woman.

According to police, officers were called to the 900 block of North Ruddle on June 3 for multiple dogs attacking an elderly woman.

In a news release by Blytheville police on Aug. 17, Sgt. Robin Haught-Angel confirmed the victim as Jeane Bennett, 93.

They found Bennett with her family in the backyard of her home with multiple bite wounds on her face and extremities.

Police said the wounds were severe enough to expose the bone.

“Officers began providing first aid including the application of tourniquets,” Sgt. Haught-Angel said. “Witnesses reported hearing a scream from family members and went to their aid. They reported three large pit bull dogs from next door were in the yard being aggressive and attacking the witness. They were able to fight them off and get them back into their fenced yard.”

Police said officers saw the three dogs had blood on them and were being aggressive and they euthanized two of them at the scene. The third dog was euthanized by a local vet.

All three dogs were tested for rabies.

Blytheville police said the victim was taken to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

She stayed in that hospital until she died on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The neighbors say the woman was a very loving member of the community.

In the update provided on Aug. 17, Blytheville police confirmed they arrested David Veasey, 43, of Blytheville, as the owner of the dogs.

Police arrested Veasey on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

He faces 2 counts of felony aggravated assault, 2 counts of unlawful dog attack, and various violations of city ordinance.
