MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - This weekend, tourists and locals alike will have to pay a fee when they visit Beale Street.

Friday and Saturday nights, folks will have to pay a $5 security fee at Beale Street after 10 p.m. The fee is meant to help reduce crowd size.

One of the last times the fee was put in place was Memorial Day earlier this summer. Now it’s being used during Elvis Week in Memphis, a very popular time for tourists to visit the bluff city.

In this past Memorial Day weekend, president & CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission Paul Young says fees to enter Beale have been successful in the past in reducing crime and preventing dangerous stampedes.

“It has proven to reduce the size of the crowds and enhance public safety, and so we’re doing that this weekend just based on the expectation for the crowd size,” said Young.

Young said then a security fee may be used again in the future during weekends with large crowds, and now that’s becoming a reality this weekend.

In the past, the money collected funded extra officers and security features on Beale.
