St. Louis Blues player Jay Bouwmeester underwent successful heart procedure

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KFVS) - The St. Louis Blues held a news conference at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12 on Jay Bouwmeester’s condition.

General Manager Doug Armstrong said he’s doing well and undergoing a number of tests to determine what happened and why.

On Feb. 14 Armstrong announced that Bouwmeester has undergone a successful Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) procedure at US Irvine Medical Center in Anaheim.

The procedure restores the heart’s normal rhythm.

At this time, Armstrong said Bouwmeester is under the care of UCI doctors.

Bouwmeester will be flown back to St. Louis and monitored by Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University physicians upon his release.

The St. Louis Blues and the Anaheim Ducks game was postponed after Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench during the first period.

St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong said Bouwmeester had a “cardiac episode” in a statement.

“With 7:50 remaining in the first period of our game tonight, Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode and collapsed on our bench after completing his shift. Thankfully, with the quick response of our medical trainers, Anaheim medical trainers and their team physicians, they were able to stabilize Jay. He was alert and moving all of his extremities as he was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. Currently, Jay is conscious and alert as he undergoes further testing by Anaheim’s physicians. We will update Jay’s condition on Wednesday morning.”

Team officials said the game would be made up at a later date.

The team said on Twitter, they have placed Bouwmeester on injured reserve.

They’re playing on Thursday in Las Vegas.

The Blues said they will provide an update on Bouwmeester’s status early next week.
