CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WIS) - The Carolina Panthers have hired collegiate football coach Matt Rhule as the team’s new head coach.
Rhule was the coach at Baylor University for the past three seasons. He took Baylor to the Sugar Bowl in 2019, two years after a 1-11 season in 2017.
Rhule has one season of NFL experience. He was an assistant offensive line coach for the New York Giants in 2012.
The Panthers, who finished 5-11 last season, fired coach Ron Rivera in early December. He has since been hired as the coach for the Washington Redskins.
The team hasn’t made the playoffs since 2017.
