Memphis 901 FC picks up first home win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis 901 FC was back in action Wednesday night in its first match of U.S. Open Cup Play.
The U.S. Open Cup is an In-Season Tournament pitting All Levels of USA Soccer against each other. 901 FC hosted the MLS New York Red Bulls U23 squad in the second round.
It didn’t take long to see the first goal of the game. In the 5th minute, Red Bulls’ Jean Paul Marin sneaks one past FC goalkeeper Scott Levene.
But fear not, because Lagos Kunga is here. The Atlanta United winger on loan to 901 gets fouled on the attack, setting up a free kick for for Cam Lindley, who capitalizes from 25 yards out to tie the game in the 8th minute.
In the 26th minute, with Kunga attacking for 901 again, he assists to Josh Morton who gives Memphis the lead 2-1.
Morton adds another in the Second half as Memphis won 3-1.
Memphis 901 FC will play in Open Cup round 3 on May 29 against Fellow USL member Hartford. That game will be at Mike Rose Soccer Complex because the Redbirds are in town.
A win in that one would pit Memphis against an MLS squad later this Summer.
Next, 901 FC will be back in USL action, hosting the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday at 7 p.m. downtown at the Zone.
